Points to be noted:

  • As the above table shows, there is a shortage in domestic production vis-a-vis demand. It is unlikely this shortfall will be bridged.

  • Green peas, lentils and some dry beans should not be difficult to sell in India.

  • Pulses are on the Open General License for the purpose of imports which means that they require no approval.

  • Branded food products are becoming popular especially in the cities and this will favourably influence the market for imported pulses as well.
